The Taiwanese National Health Insurance (NHI) held a 'Digital Governance Seminar on Cancer Treatment' and announced an innovative initiative utilizing the FHIR standard. Previously, pre-screening for cancer drug coverage required 1–2 weeks. By adopting the FHIR format, this process has been significantly streamlined, reducing the review time to just one day. Multiple medical institutions, such as Chang Gung Hospital systems, have implemented FHIR. This integration simplifies complex procedures that previously required VPN access or logging into multiple separate systems. Clinicians report significant improvements in application efficiency (e.g., saving at least half an hour). The NHI aims to enhance digitalization and transparency through this effort, aligning Taiwan with international healthcare information standards. This development is expected to have a major impact by improving patient access to early treatment. Currently, 18 hospitals are actively using the FHIR format for pre-screening applications, demonstrating the rapid adoption of this technology in the Taiwanese healthcare system.
