Previously, Taiwan's healthcare landscape suffered from fragmented electronic medical record (EMR) systems. Due to lack of compatibility, transferring a patient's records between hospitals often required physical media like CDs or paper copies. The successful implementation of a 'Cross-Hospital FHIR Data Platform,' involving Taichung Zhongshan Hospital, Chang Gung Hospital, and Mackay Hospital, marks a major milestone. According to the Ministry of Health and Welfare officials, this platform successfully converts raw patient data into the internationally recognized FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) format. FHIR is described as the 'WWW of electronic medical records,' providing a standardized resource for high interoperability. This capability allows clinicians to instantly access past medical histories or medication records from other institutions when treating a patient, thereby enhancing diagnostic accuracy and reducing redundant tests. The initiative highlights that while Taiwan has over 40 separate EMR systems, the ability to unify this data into a single, usable resource is crucial for improving care quality.
