Ministry of Health's 'Taiwan 50' Smart Healthcare Apps Align with International Standards to Promote Data Interoperability

The Ministry of Health (MOH) hosted its inaugural 'Taiwan 50 Excellent SMART App Awards' and International SUMMIT Forum, recognizing 50 outstanding applications in the smart healthcare sector. This initiative covers diverse areas such as AI and Clinical Decision Support, aiming to establish a 'SMART Application Marketplace' where all medical institutions can utilize a unified architecture. International experts (including Kenneth D. Mandl and Graham Grieve) participated, emphasizing the critical importance of standardizing medical information and achieving cross-system data linkage. The MOH stated that this movement is crucial for moving away from traditional closed medical information systems to achieve 'data unification,' 'rule unification,' and 'application unification.' Specifically, by adopting the FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) standard, the goal is to realize a system where patient health data can be instantly connected in real-time across different healthcare providers, provided proper authorization. This aims to reduce the need for carrying paper records or undergoing unnecessary duplicate tests, thereby improving diagnostic efficiency and quality. Furthermore, MOH officials highlighted that using the 'SMART on FHIR' standard architecture allows developed applications to function like smartphone apps—achieving a 'plug-and-play' capability across various medical information systems. This lowers implementation barriers and facilitates the rapid spread of high-quality applications to all levels of care. Ultimately, this framework is designed to position Taiwan's smart healthcare solutions for expansion into the international market.
