Connecting to National FHIR Standards! Tai'an Hospital Partners with Zihui Technology to Implement TW Core in Clinical Settings

With the Ministry of Health and Welfare promoting the 'Healthy Taiwan' policy, FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) has become the core trend for unifying national medical data formats. However, fully converting existing medical records to FHIR and applying it across all aspects presents significant challenges: high clinical complexity requiring specialized manpower; handling massive volumes of real-time generated data; and keeping up with evolving standards (IGs) for different use cases. The key achievement here was overcoming these three hurdles by enabling the near-real-time conversion of most data required during patient consultation into FHIR format, aligned with the national TW Core IG standard, presented from a clinical perspective. Tai'an Hospital partnered with Zihui Technology to convert all medical records—including summaries, lab reports, orders, medications, bacterial tests, imaging, and checkups—into FHIR structures compliant with TW Core IG, making them available for immediate use by physicians. Furthermore, the hospital implemented the 'Insight System,' built on the SMART on FHIR international standard application architecture. This system addresses the pain point of switching between multiple systems by presenting all retrieved data from the structured FHIR format within a single interface. Clinicians can view patient history (e.g., cancer care: TNM staging, chemotherapy cycles, side effects, tumor markers) using timelines and trend graphs, significantly improving diagnostic support and decision-making efficiency. The system's adherence to TW Core IG and SMART on FHIR ensures flexible integration with future international medical applications. Zihui Technology emphasized that its solution includes 'unlimited IG' and 'conversion management' functions, allowing the hospital to build a new era of data governance while ensuring high usability, privacy, and security standards.
